Designing an Expressive Illustrated Character
Use silhouette, colour, and expression to give an illustrated character a clear identity.
Find the character’s story
Describe who the character is before listing details about appearance. A curious traveller with a worn notebook suggests different poses and props from a calm gardener at the end of a workday.
Use a clear visual structure
Write the subject, pose, setting, light, and finish as separate parts of the prompt. Specify a limited palette and a readable silhouette. Keep background detail subordinate to the expression.
Refine with purpose
Compare your first results at a small size. Check whether the expression remains readable and whether the pose feels natural. Adjust a single element between attempts and save the most useful variations.
Put it into practice
Browse the prompt gallery, save an example, and create your own variation.
